Google announced an important change to its Core Web Vitals last week. This change concerns the introduction of a new metric called Interaction to Next Paint (INP), which will replace the previous metric First Input Delay (FID). The change will come into effect in March 2024.

New metrics for a better user experience

The Core Web Vitals were introduced by Google's Chrome team in 2020 and are used to evaluate the quality of websites. The new INP metric, which was initially presented as an experimental metric in May 2022, is now intended to evaluate the user-friendliness of websites even better.

The previous FID metric had known limitations when it came to measuring the responsiveness of websites. The new INP metric is designed to address these shortcomings. After another year of testing and collecting feedback, the Chrome team has decided to make INP the new metric for Core Web Vitals.

Effects for website operators and developers

For website operators and developers, this means that they need to evaluate their pages for the new metric. To help them do this, the Google Search Console will provide a report containing the INP values later this year. From March 2024, FID will no longer be displayed in Google Search Console and will be replaced by INP.

Google emphasizes that a good user experience involves more than just good scores in the Core Web Vitals. Nevertheless, website operators are advised to focus on improving their Core Web Vitals in order to be successful in Google searches and ensure a good overall user experience.

More information on the new INP metric and instructions on how to optimize websites for INP can be found on the Chrome team's blog.
