Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has launched a text-based rival service to Twitter: the Threads app. In just five days, Threads has gained an impressive 100 million users, beating the previous net record set by AI-based service ChatGPT, which took two months to reach this number of users.
Threads was developed with the goal of giving you a similar experience to Twitter, with a focus on public, text-based posts and conversations. Thanks to the tight integration with Instagram, anyone who already has an Instagram account can log in directly to Threads and transfer their contacts.
The rising star of social media
Back in 2019, Instagram released an app called Threads, which was designed as a messaging app for photos, videos and status updates with a close circle of friends. However, after many of the most popular features of this app were either introduced or were to be introduced on Instagram, the original Threads app was discontinued in 2021.
With the acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk, the scenario changed and Meta decided to capitalize on the competition by expanding its text-based features and developing the new Threads app. The Threads app was officially launched in 100 countries on July 5, 2023 and has since been available in the Apple and Android app stores. In the European Union, however, the launch was delayed due to regulatory issues.
How are you already using Threads in Germany?
Although Threads is currently not officially available in the European Union, you can use the app in Germany via small detours. You can find detailed instructions here:
For Android users:
To use Threads as an Android user in Germany, you should download the APK from Threads directly instead of going through the Google Play Store. The procedure is as follows:
- First, you need to make sure that the installation of apps from unknown sources is allowed on your Android device. You can find this in the settings of your device, usually under "Security" or "Apps and notifications". There you should activate the option "Install unknown apps" or "Allow unknown sources".
- Next, you need to find and download the APK file from Threads. You can do this on various websites that provide APK files, for example APKMirror or APKPure. Make sure you use a trustworthy site.
- Once you have downloaded the APK file, navigate to your download folder and tap on the APK file to start the installation.
- Once the installation is complete, you can open threads and log in with your German Instagram account.
For iOS users:
For iOS users, it's a little more complicated to use Threads in Germany. Here are the steps you need to follow:
- First you need to change the region of your app store. Open the settings on your iOS device and tap on your name at the top of the screen.
- Scroll down and tap on "iTunes & App Store".
- Tap on your Apple ID, then on "Show Apple ID".
- You may need to confirm your Apple ID before you can continue. Then tap on "Country/Region".
- Select a country in which Threads is available, for example the USA or Great Britain.
- You will be asked to accept the new terms of use. Scroll down and tap on "Accept".
- Now you have to enter a payment method and an address that correspond to the selected country. Here you can either select "None" for the payment method or use an international gift card.
- Once you have completed these steps, you can go to the App Store and download Threads.
Please note that these steps may result in you no longer being able to access content that is specific to your previous App Store. However, you can change your region back at any time by going through these steps again and selecting your original region. You should also be aware that these changes may affect other services that use your region settings.
Controversies and challenges
However, the introduction of Threads has not been without controversy. Threads came under fire because users have to delete their Instagram accounts in order to be able to delete their Threads account. Twitter is also threatening Meta with a lawsuit, accusing the US company of misappropriating "trade secrets and other intellectual property" because Meta recruited former Twitter employees. Meta denies this.
However, the sustained growth of Threads and its acceptance by users will show whether it will be a strong competitor for established platforms such as Twitter.
